Bitscope - PC oscilloscopes and analyzers E-mail
Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:23

BS100 is a high performance isolated USB Mixed Signal Oscilloscope designed for use with a PC or notebook: 100 MHz Analog Input Bandwidth, Dual Converters with 4 inputs (BNC & POD), 8 logic/timing channels and Smart POD, 40MS/s Logic Analyzer, 25nS capture, DSP Waveform Generator (option), Real-Time Spectrum Analyzer, Mixed Signal Data Recorder, Electrically Isolated USB, User ProgrammableA versatile data acquisition system packs a digital oscilloscope, spectrum analyser, logic analyser, data recorder and waveform generator into one affordable package. BitScopes are USB or Ethernet connected PC Based Mixed Signal Oscilloscopes. This means they capture and display one, two or four analog signals and eight logic or timing signals, simultaneously. Any BitScope can be used as a:

  • Digital Storage Oscilloscope;
  • Logic State Analyzer;
  • Spectrum Analyzer;
  • Data Recorder.

Some models include an Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG) and all of them have a Smart POD expansion connector on the front for logic probes and external signal processing modules. If you design, test or repair embedded systems, work with microcontrollers, robotics, sensors and servos, or modern automotive, avionic or other control systems you'll inevitably find you need to see analog and digital or logic signals simultaneously and time synchronized. Programming Library and Custom Applications for BitScope, a.k.a. BitLib, is a powerful but easy to use library for creating custom BitScope applications. BitLib comes with some applications (including source) to get started using it straight away:

  • Digital Storage Oscilloscope: The BitLib Scope application is a program built with BitLib that implements a single channel oscilloscope. It demonstrates many of the analog capture capabilities of BitScope. BitScopes are Mixed Signal Oscilloscopes;
  • Multichannel Digital Voltmeter: The BitLib Meter application is a program built with BitLib that implements a useful multi-channel voltmeter: a practical real-time 4 channel digital voltmeter. It demonstrates how to use all analog inputs at once (2 x BNC + 2 x POD) as well as the calibration features of the library;
  • Arbitrary Waveform Generator: The BitLib Generator is a BitLib application similar to BitLib Scope but which demonstrates the waveform generation capabilities of BS3xx BitScope models. an arbitrary waveform generator to synthesize functions or replay real-world waveforms recorded with DSO's built-in data recorder;
  • Data Acquisition Spreadsheet: BitLib Sheet is a BitLib example that that demonstrates how BitScope can be integrated into a third-party numerical analysis tool as a live data source;
  • Transient Data Recorder: The BitLib Recorder is a BitLib application similar to BitLib Scope but which demonstrates the streaming capture and recording capabilities of newer BitScope models. A data recorder which creates CSV waveform data files.

Software Applications for BitScope Mixed Signal Oscilloscopes are:

  • BitScope-DSO: it is much more than just oscilloscope software for your PC. It provides a full range of test instruments in one easy to use software package. Integrated functions include: Digital Storage Oscilloscope, Mixed Signal Oscilloscope, Spectrum Analyzer, Logic Analyzer, Data Recorder, Networking. DSO takes full advantage of BitScope's powerful mixed mode waveform and logic data capture capability. And in BitScope models that support it, DSO adds arbitrary waveform generation (AWG) networked access for remote measurement and data acquisition as well as offline captured waveform replay and multiscope control, all accessed from the one PC software application. It's fast and intuitive;
  • BitScope-Chart-Recorder: it measures periodic waveforms captured in real-time with BitScope. It locks onto a waveform frequency and peak amplitude to measure and report the major waveform parameters. The fundamental frequency and  period, RMS, minimum, maximum, mean and peak-to-peak voltages are all reported. Data is presented as a chart over time. All data can be easily recorded to disk. Chart is fully automatic and the parameter updates are reported dynamically as the waveform changes. It also shows a scaled display of the waveform itself with auto-ranging control of the inputs and sample rates to optimize the measurements;
  • BitScope-meter: it is an oscilloscope, AC/DC voltmeter and frequency meter in one easy to use package. It's like a waveform generator in reverse. Plug-in any waveform and WaveMeter will lock on and display it while simultaneously reporting waveform parameters in realtime. Features and benefits include: Real-time waveform display, Dynamic parameter reporting, Automatic frequency/period meter, Peak, RMS & Min/Max voltmeters, DC mean and offset voltmeters, Sophisticated auto-locking trigger, Fast point & click operation. WaveMeter is an ideal tool to quickly view and measure AC/DC signals and voltages. There are no complicated parameters, just connect the signal and view the results!
  • BitScope-Logic: it is a 12 channel mixed signal logic timing and protocol analysis application. Logic uses the high speed data capture capabilities of BitScope to implement a powerful but easy to use multi-channel mixed signal serial logic protocol analyzer. Logic supports the SPI, I2C and CAN protocols as well as standard serial and logic timing analysis. In addition, up to 4 analog channels may be captured at the same time. Features and benefits include: SPI, CAN, I2C and async serial protocols, Up to 8 channels decoded simultaneously, Trace navigator, Built-in 4 channel auto-range oscilloscope, Multi-channel logic and analog triggers, Colour coded channels with user labels. Logic is perfect for debugging and analyzing systems that use serial logic, especially in a mixed signal context and is compatible with other BitScope apps.

Dinotrace - A Verilog/VHDL waveform viewer E-mail
Thursday, 20 October 2011 13:38
Dinotrace is a graphical signal waveform tracing tool for logic design traces for GNU/Linux-X11 that supports traces in the form of Verilog Value Change Dump (VCD files, like GTKWave, e.g. generated by Ghdl or iverilog), ASCII, Verilator, Tempest CCLI, COSMOS, Chango and Decsim Binary. It includes, and allows, placing cursors, highlighting signals, searching, printing, color highlighting and a special interface to the .el file that allows signal information to be annotated into source code using Emacs (both Emacs and Dinotrace can share the same colour to represent signals). Verilog-mode provides designer with context-sensitive highlighting, auto indenting, and macro expansion capabilities to greatly reduce Verilog coding time. It also prevents additional human errors while coding. Dinotrace is, also, optimized for rapid debugging. With a simple script (vtrace), a simulation failure will automatically place cursors where errors occur, add comments visible in the wave form viewer. Four mouse clicks and the errors will be highlighted in the log files, and the values of signals at the error will be seen in the source. Dinotrace has a "classic" look and has not received a lot of new changes recently. However it is still in very wide use because it is very solid, and has all of the important features needed for everyday use. For more information click here.

The user can add and modify the graphic user interface as desired. WGM-101 USB Waveform GeneratorThe WGM-101 is an USB-powered waveform generator. This device generates all standard test waveforms (Sine, Square, Triangle, Sawtooth) as well as arbitrary waveforms created by the user. Precise digital frequency control allows adjustment of the output frequency from 0.1Hz to 100kHz with a resolution of 0.1Hz. The open source graphical user interface (WGM101) allows the user to download custom waveforms into the device for non-volatile storage, sweep the frequency over a particular frequency range with a point-and-click interface, and directly control the output amplitude and offset. Circuit Gear is an oscilloscope, waveform generator, and digital I/O port integrated into one small, low cost unit. Here is some features;
  • 20MS/s dual channel, 10-bit oscilloscope;
  • 2 MHz DDS arbitrary waveform generator;
  • Eight channel digital I/O;
  • USB powered, no AC adaptor required;
  • Open source software for GNU/Linux (and others SOs).
The current releases of software provide basic features for the instruments, but there are many that could be added. For example, the oscilloscope would benefit from 'waveform math' commands. The waveform generator could be configured as an audio sweep generator and so on.
